about

This track was very much an experiment, combing a clarinet-based motif with some spoken words I’d written, inspired by 1. A live butterfly exhibition and 2. My childhood memories of the overgrown garden I used to play in.

I looked up some Latin names of butterflies to add to the mix.

lyrics

They were all there, gathered around, in the wild garden.

Scattered in small groups, each seemingly as lost as the other.

It was July, high summer, and a thousand bugs flitted, clicked, and crawled through this hazy, temperate world. Insects of all kinds ...

Lacewings
Thrips
Damselflies
Muscids
Darkling Beetles

Morpho Peleides

He didn't understand how he knew their names, but they were beautiful and familiar to him...

He approached the most unusual looking stranger, a grizzled old man with a tattoo along his arm that read "It's not your fault.", the man would not respond, and stared-on blankly.

He felt he would like to disappear now into one of the many lush patches of soft foliage.

He would let himself go entirely, drop backwards in slow motion, allow the wondrous liberation to envelop him, the warm indolence, innocence... each leaf soaking up another injury, like sunlight, rerouting another fork in the road.

He heard distant shouting, but was quickly distracted by something in the grass, where a butterfly had landed. It was a piece of paper with a child's spidery handwriting. It was a story and it began...

'They were all there, gathered around in the wild garden...'
